The Science Team

The core of the GODAE OceanView Science Team (GOVST) consists of scientists leading the scientific development of the major ocean analysis and forecasting centres in the world, generating real-time operational ocean forecasts, hindcasts and reanalysis. The primary purpose of this team is to accelerate the improvement and exploitation of the systems through exchange of information and expertise and the coordination of joint assessments. The activities of the Science Team are focused on:

  • Assessments of forecast system and component performance combined with component improvements
  • Initiatives aiming to exploit the forecasting systems for greater societal benefit
  • Evaluations of the dependence of the forecasting systems and societal benefits on the components of the observation system
GOV co-chairsGOV co-chairs F Davidson, PN Vinayachandran and E Chassignet

The science team is co-chaired by

  • Fraser Davidson (Fisheries and Oceans, Canada)
  • Eric Chassignet (Florida State University, USA)
  • P. N. Vinayachandran (Indian Institute of Science, India)

The science team includes experts leading the scientific development of the major national ocean analysis and forecasting systems, of specialist oceanographers implementing and improving these systems (expertise in observations, modelling and data assimilation) and representatives of key observing systems (e.g. Argo, GHRSST and OST science teams).

Previous co-chairs:
- Eric Dombrowsky, Mercator Ocean (2009 - 2014)
- Andreas Schiller, CSIRO (2009 - 2017)
