FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

GODAE OceanView Symposium 2013

"Advancing Operational Oceanography

"5 years of GODAE OceanView - current progress and future priorities"*

4-6 November 2013

NOAA-NCWCP, USA

About: Operational Oceanography aims to address many challenges with timescales from days to decades, regions ranging from coastal areas to the global ocean and applications from off-shore industries to ocean ecosystems. This is inherently an international issue which requires broad collaboration.

GODAE OceanView (GOV), following on from GODAE, is an international programme which provides coordination and leadership in consolidating and improving global and regional ocean analysis and forecasting systems and the development of new capabilities.

The GODAE OceanView Science Team (GOVST) is a forum for the main operational and research institutions to accelerate the improvement and exploitation of the systems through exchange of information and expertise and the coordination of joint assessments.

Objective: The GODAE OceanView Symposium will provide an opportunity to review the key scientific achievements of GOV in the last years, to critically examine the outcomes, and to discuss the next steps towards the future of operational ocean analysis and forecasting and its international coordination.

Location: NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NOAA/NCWCP), USA near Washington DC.

Date: 4- 6 November 2013

Expected participation: The symposium is being designed to appeal to a wide audience. Those developing or supporting the observing systems, ocean analysis and prediction systems, forecasters, service providers, the user community, decision and policy makers, researchers and programme managers from both the public and private sectors are all warmly encouraged to attend.

Structure of Symposium: The symposium will be organised around four core sessions representing multi-author plenary review papers and posters over a 3-day period. The symposium is organised by NOAA/UCAR with support from the GODAE OceanView Project Office.

Programme: Presentations will show the progress of operational oceanography infrastructure, will address key scientific & technological advances and also focus on future challenges and opportunities. Key speakers will be invited to represent the achievement in the core areas and poster sessions will provide an overview of current R&D efforts, user applications and stakeholder involvement. The programme will be available after selection of papers and posters.

The symposium will be followed by 1.5 day internal review to examine the GODAE OceanView objectives and to advise on future areas of development and activities.

Organizers: Organizing Committees consisting of members from GODAE OceanView project office, representative from the University of Maryland and members of the GODAE OceanView Science Team (GOVST) have been assigned to take responsibility of the planning and arrangement of the symposium and the review.

Registration and abstracts: Registration and submissions of abstract will open in 2013. Papers and posters will be selected to present main topics to promote discussions among different communities of developers and users.

Invitation

We invite you to join us for the GODAE OceanView symposium and contribute to the success of the event by registering your participation and submitting an abstract, which will provide you with an opportunity to discuss and advertise your finding and interests in ocean observing, ocean modelling, data assimilation and prediction from the open ocean to the littoral zone, from weather to climate, from regional to global applications, and related value-adding services. Submitted abstracts will be considered for inclusion in multi-author community papers (planned to be published in 2014) as well as for poster presentations at the event.

Participation

The symposium is designed to appeal to a wide audience and you are invited to exchange and share your experiences across all sessions. Abstracts are invited from

  • developers and/or supporters of the observing systems, ocean analyses and prediction systems
  • forecasters
  • service providers
  • the user community
  • decision and policy makers
  • researchers and programme managers from both the public and private sectors

Abstract submission
