Abstract submission deadline: 12 June 2015

Registration deadline: 30 June 2015

Registration and abstract submission of papers for the 4th COSS-TT International Coordination Workshop (ICW4) & 1st Altimetry for Regional and Coastal Ocean Models Workshop (Pilot ARCOM Workshop) at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal on 31 August – 4 September 2015 is now OPEN.

Deadline for abstract submissions is 12 June 2015.

Invitation

After three very successful workshops in Miami (2012), Lecce (2013), and Rincon, Puerto Rico (2014), the 4th COSS-TT International Coordination Workshop (ICW4) will be held on

31 August - 4 September

at the facilities of the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal. It will be hosted by MARETEC, a Marine Environmental and Technology Center associated with the Technical University of Lisbon.

The COSSTT-ICW4 workshop will launch the 1st Altimetry for Regional/Coastal Ocean Models Workshop (Pilot ARCOM workshop), and will be also organized in coordination with the GODAE OceanView Intercomparisons and Validation Task Team (IV-TT). Both of these connections are important for successful COSS observational and forecasting systems and will strengthen COSS-TT priorities.

As in previous workshops, COSS community members, attendees of the previous workshops, and any interested members of the international regional/coastal ocean monitoring and forecasting communities are very welcome to attend and submit an abstract. COSS Task Team members or their substitutes are expressly invited to attend.

For general information about COSS-TT and IV-TT, please see the GODAE OceanView task team web pages.

For a description of ARCOM and its objectives please check the ARCOM page.

Oral or poster presentations by attendees are invited, in particular on the subjects listed below.

Abstract submissions will be set up as soon as possible and be advertised in the next weeks.

Recurrent themes at every workshop:

1. Progress of ongoing coastal ocean forecasting projects in the world coastal oceans, with a particular focus on work done by COSS community members since the previous workshops

2. Applications in coastal oceans, and science in support of those applications

Special ICW4 themes:

3. Steps taken by Large-scale Ocean Forecasting Systems to serve the needs of coastal users (papers from GOV “large-scale” groups are particularly welcome)

4. Data and metrics to assess the quality of Regional and Coastal Ocean Forecasting Systems for science and applications (in coordination with the IV-TT and with and with the EU COST action EOS WG4)

5. Demonstrating the added value of downscaling from the Large-scale systems (in coordination with the IV-TT and with EU COST action EOS WG4)

6. Using altimetry products in regional/coastal ocean models for assimilation and validation (ARCOM).

At least a full day of the workshop will be devoted to themes 3-4-5, and at least another full day on theme 6 (including ARCOM tutorial sessions).

Authors are invited to indicate the most relevant theme(s) for their abstract, when submitting. Please also indicate whether your preference would be Oral or Poster.

First - ANNOUNCEMENT

4th COSS-TT International Coordination Workshop

MARETEC, Lisbon, Portugal

1 - 4 September 2015

The GODAE OceanView COSS Task Team (COSS-TT) continues to value the importance of an international forum to advance science in support of coastal ocean forecasting and applications. Following our last successful workshop in Puerto Rico (Jan 2014) we are now planning the

4th COSS-TT International Coordination Workshop (ICW-4) 1 – 4 September 2015 (Tue – Fri) Lisbon, Portugal

Please SAVE THE DATE in your calendar.

The workshop will be hosted by MARETEC, Lisbon, Portugal. MARETEC is a Marine Environmental and Technology Center associated with the Technical University of Lisbon. Please note that we had to move the initial date (planned for June 2015) to September because of conflicts with other meetings. Please let us know as soon as possible about any other problems arising from moving this date to September.

This time we are planning to specifically invite members of the GOVST and/or GOV Patrons Group to the workshop to discuss coastal interfaces and how to assess the quality of large-scale products aimed at serving the downstream needs of coastal models and applications.. Further details about the event and location will be made available in the next months.

Many thanks for your continued support and interest.

With best wishes,

The workshop organisers

(Villy Kourafalou, Pierre De Mey, Francisco Campuzano and Kirsten Wilmer-Becker)
