- The meeting will start on Monday, 3 April with the meeting registration at 11:30 followed by lunch at 12:30.

- No remote access available (we are not able to set up a live stream or recording facility for this meeting due to costs)

- Ice-breaker & dinner planned for Mon, 3 April & Thu, 6 April evening (sponsored by our hosts!!!)

- Tour to Robben Island on Fri, 7 April afternoon (self-pay, participants have confirmed interest by survey/email)

Presentations: We have tried to accommodate all submitted abstracts as oral and poster presentations. Please either check on the attached agenda or on the COSS-TT abstract page what presentation type has been assigned to you. Posters: Posters should be provided in A0 size , portrait format (841 x 1189 mm).

Meeting tour: We plan to organise a tour to Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was kept in prison) on Friday afternoon (7 April 2017). Please consider this when you make your flight/accommodation bookings. The tour will be on a self-pay basis, costs will be around R320 (~£20, €23, $24) Please check on the meeting website for further details.

Also, all participants from earlier COSS-TT event, particularly the Lisbon workshop are very strongly encouraged and welcome to attend.

Call for papers

for the

5th COSS-TT International Coordination Meeting (ICM5)

Invitation

 

After four very successful COSS-TT events in Miami (2012), Lecce (2013), Rincon, Puerto Rico (2014) and Lisbon (2015) the 5th COSS-TT International Coordination Meeting (ICM5) will be held on 3 – 7 April 2017 at the facilities of the Breakwater Lodge Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa.

The meeting will be jointly hosted by the Nansen-Tutu Centre and the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) with support from the CSIR and the University of Cape Town.

As in previous events, COSS community members, attendees of previous COSS-TT events, any interested members of the international regional/coastal ocean monitoring and forecasting communities and particularly local scientists and researchers are very welcome to attend and submit an abstract. COSS Task Team members or their substitutes are expressly invited to attend. We would like to further extend the COSS-TT links with the Altimetry Community and specifically invite members of ARCOM to the meeting in Cape Town. We would also like to invite members of the GOVST and/or GOV Patrons Group to the meeting to strengthen the collaboration between the coastal community and the large-scale systems on how to assess the quality of products aimed at serving the downstream needs of coastal models and applications.

Oral or poster presentations by attendees are invited, in particular on the subjects listed below.

Meeting topics / themes:

  1. Science in support to coastal ocean forecasting with the following special themes in particular: representation of coastal upwellings and river plumes in models, including interdisciplinary aspects (bgc, sediments).
  2. Coastal model assessment, with the following special theme in particular: comparison of large-scale and downscaled coastal systems with the same set of metrics (as agreed in Lisbon).
  3. Altimetry for regional/coastal ocean models, with the following special theme in particular: processes influencing coastal sea-level dynamics, realistic modelling of those processes.
  4. Operational and pre-operational ocean forecasting systems, with the following special themes in particular: coastal forecasting system description and updates; quality and performance of large-scale ocean forecasting systems in the coastal areas.

Registration and fee payment

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

The GODAE OceanView Coastal and Shelf Seas Task Team (COSS-TT) works in coordination with the GODAE OceanView Science Team and GOOS towards the provision of a sound scientific basis for sustainable multidisciplinary downscaling and forecasting activities in the world coastal oceans.

The COSS-TT continues to value the importance of an international forum to advance science in support of coastal ocean forecasting and applications. Following our last successful COSS-TT event in Lisbon (September 2015) we are now planning the

5th COSS-TT International Coordination Meeting (ICM5)

3-7 April 2017 (Mon pm – Fri am, 4 days)

Cape Town, South Africa

Please SAVE THE DATE in your calendar.

The meeting will be jointly hosted by the Nansen-Tutu Centre and theSouth African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) with support from the CSIR and the University of Cape Town. The meeting will also host dedicated ARCOM (Altimetry for Regional and Coastal Ocean Models) sessions, as a follow-up to the 1st ARCOM meeting during the 2015 ICW-4 in Lisbon.

As in previous events, COSS community members, attendees of the previous COSS-TT events, any interested members of the international regional/coastal ocean monitoring and forecasting communities and particularly local scientists and researchers are very welcome to attend and submit an abstract.
