Background:

The GODAE Oceanview Intercomparison and Validation Task Team (IV-TT) aims to coordinate and promote the development of scientific validation and intercomparison of operational oceanographic systems. A particular focus is a real-time intercomparison of GOV systems using the Class 4 framework. This intercomparison has been ongoing since 2013 and was the focus of two articles in the recent GOV special issue in the Journal of Operational Oceanography.

Workshop objectives:

This workshop has four main objectives:

  1. Review the current status of the Class4 intercomparison and discuss outstanding issues
  2. Discuss the future directions of this intercomparison, both in terms of additional datasets as well as more detailed analyses of the results.
  3. Discuss ongoing initiatives like the “Class 1 consensus forecast” and other additional possible assessments based on existing forecasts produced by operational centres.
  4. Discuss recent advances in evaluation and verification efforts, and the development of new metrics

Validation and verification issues related to nesting/downscaling , coupled modeling, observing system evaluations and biogeochemical modeling are not in the central scope of the workshop, but will be discussed in relation to activities within the other task teams.

Attendance:

The workshop is open to all members of the IV-TT, the GOV Science Team and Patrons' Group. Other interested parties should contact Fabrice Hernandez (Fabrice.Hernandez@mercator-ocean.fr) or Greg Smith (Gregory.Smith2@canada.ca).

Location/venue:

A GOV IV-TT workshop is being planned for September 20-22, 2016 in Montreal, Canada at the St. Lawrence Centre in Old Montreal.
