WP1000 - Project management and communication

WP1100 - Project management

Leader: CLS

Objectives: This work package covers the overall project management and control and coordination issues among partners, risk management, reporting to and relations with the European Space Agency (ESA), contacts with related projects, organisation of meetings of the various management bodies and project-wide. It also covers all legal and financial related aspects, effort monitoring, cost statement collection and analysis, related statistics, interim payment coordination and transfer, budget follow-up and liaison with partners on these topics.

The Work Package manager is responsible of all the deliverables generated in the frame of the activity.

 

WP1200 - Communication

Leader: Met Office

Objectives: The overall objectives of this work package are to coordinate the dissemination the results of the SMOS-Niño15 project towards target scientific communities and institutional bodies.

This WP deals with the development and the operation of an open and public project web site which includes:

  • Develop a web-site under the GOV web-site which addresses all requirements of chapter 3.3.1 of the SoW [AD 1]
  • Review and update the web portal once per month
  • Collection of inputs for preparation of all deliverables
  • Develop a collection of high quality graphics
  • Generate web stories with inputs from project partners

WP2000 - Data collection and investigation of El Nino 2015/16

WP2100 - Building SMOS-Nino15 database

Leader: CLS

Objectives: This work package deals with the design and implementation of a suitable database (DB) which includes the following tasks:

  • Make a preliminary design of a suitable database
  • Discuss the design with all project partners
  • Write a description of the database in a Technical Report (TR-1)

 

WP2200 - Scientific analysis

Leader: Mercator Océan

Objectives: The aim of this work package is to document the onset and evolution of the 2015/16 El Niño event using satellite and in situ measurements (OBJ-1). A scientific paper on Nino 2015 will focus on the description and the analysis of the phenomenon.

This WP deals with the description of the specificities of the El Nino 2015 which includes the following tasks:

  • Investigate the El Niño 2015/2016 event based on the scientific analysis of the in situ, satellite and operational model based products from Met Office and Mercator Ocean.
  • Write a Technical Report (TR-2) “The onset, evolution and impact of the 2015/16 El Niño event using satellite and in situ measurements” that may be written in the form of a peer reviewed journal article.
  • Give recommendations on the period and duration of the OSE experiment and how the SSS data assimilation component (error and observation operator) should be tuned to efficiently assimilate the SMOS data.

WP3000 - OSE design

Leader: Met Office

Objectives: The aim of this work package is to design of the Observing System Experiments which includes the following tasks:

  • Make a preliminary design of the experiments to test the impact of satellite-derived SSS during the 2015/16 El Nino
  • Discuss the design with all project partners
  • Write a description of the OSE design in a Technical Report (TR-3)
  • Obtain review of the OSE design from OSEVal-TT co-chairs and experts from CEC-OS

WP4000 - OSE implementation

Leader: Mercator Océan

Objectives: The aim of this work package is to implement the OSEs and product a complete set of metrics (based on GOVST best practice) to evaluate the impact of satellite SSS during the 2015/16 El Niño event. It includes the following tasks:

  • Adapt the assimilation component following the recommendations from TR-2 and TR-3 (observation error, operator) 
  • Check and validate the implementation of the OSE prior to its use
  • Run the Met Office and Mercator Ocean systems over the agreed period between all project partners with and without SSS observation assimilation
  • Write the Technical Note (TN-1) “Implementation and validation of the SMOS-Niño15 OSE to test the impact of satellite SSS for the 2015/16 El Niño event following GOV-ST community consensus best practices”

WP5000 - OSE output processing, validation and analysis

WP5100 - Refine GODAE OceanView requirements

Leader: Met Office

Objectives: The aim of this work package is to refine the GODAE OceanView requirements for SSS, which includes the following tasks:

  • Based on the analysis of the outputs of the OSEs write a justification for a new set of requirements for satellite SSS
  • Request inputs from other GOV-ST contributors
  • Write technical note describing the refined requirements

 

WP5200 - Writing papers

Leader: Mercator Océan

Objectives: The aim of this work package is to prepare and submit at least three journal publications based on the results and activities of the SMOS-Niño15 activity. Those articles will address:

  • The Niño 2015/16 description
  • The SMOS OSEs results and the GODAE Impact Statement related to those OSE experiments

WP6000 - International workshop and final reporting

WP6100 - Final reporting

Leader: Mercator Océan

Objectives: The aim of work package is to highlight the activities conducted during the project and the results obtained. It includes the following tasks:

  • Gather the important results presented in the different reports and articles
  • Present the study and the main outcomes in a clear and concise manner than can be distributed outside of the project
  • Write a Scientific Roadmap to foster future development that could potentially transfer the outcomes of the project into future sustained activities

 

WP6200 -  International workshop

Leader: CLS

Objectives: This work package will highlight the activities conducted during the project and the results obtained. It includes the following tasks:

  • Organise an open invitation Workshop at an European location In collaboration with GOV-ST OSEval-TT
  • Consolidate all deliverables into a Technical Data package (TDP)
